Fluff on the brain? The mesmerizing magic fluff yarns.

Fluff on the brain? The mesmerizing magic fluff yarns.

We'll admit it, we've had fluff on the brain this spring.

Our spring Knit Along pattern was  Love Note by Tin Can Knits, and one option was to hold two yarns together — a lace weight mohair with a fingering weight yarn. The results were stunning (watch the slideshow here!), with so many fabulous sweaters featuring that magical halo of fluff.

Adding Fluff Yarn — "One plus one does not equal two."

The above sage quote was from Kristin, the Goat's owner, during this episode of our podcast when we discussed some of the fluffy choices we stock.

One of the delights and challenges for our knit along participants was envisioning HOW EXACTLY the fluff yarn would change the overall look and color of their fabric. It felt mysterious, almost like alchemy with yarn, where the resulting fabric could be surprising.

Some of us agonized over the choices and combinations, a few of us swatched with different fluff colors, and many folks just grabbed a pair of yarns and went for it. All of the finished sweaters were gorgeous!

Fluff-tastically BRIGHT!
I've been working on a new kerchief design this spring, mostly in solid colors. But in this sample above, I held the kid mohair/silk throughout the pattern, and changed colors with the fingering yarn. And I was gobsmacked by the impact of the mohair/silk on the solid fingering yarns!

Like painting with yarn.
Was this knitting — or painting? This experiment was like watercolor painting when you layer color washes on top of each other.

The electrically bright fluff yarn has violet and pink undertones at play. Let's see what happens to the solids...

  • The pink segment at the top of the kerchief was the least shocking. The fingering yarn is a pretty intense pink with some purple tones.

  • The next segment of the kerchief reads as a yellow-pink. But would you ever have guessed that from looking at that intense pickle green of the fingering?!

  • The blue segment of the kerchief is next — and once again, I was shocked. I would describe the fingering yarn as a bright teal. When I added the fluff, the violet/blue tones of the fluff brings forward the blue tones from the teal.

  • The final segment presents as a light pink with some orange/coral tones. I was fascinated by the way that the fluff yarn softens and lightens the color of the fingering yarn, cooling down that hot orange/red.

Adventures in fluff!

We've just added a new member of our fluff yarn family — Aerial by Berroco. The colors are stunning and open up some great new possibilities for your fluffy knits!

Have you explored the wonders of fluff? We'd love to hear about your experience!
